Podcast 80

I wanted to start with four new songs that have been blasting out of this room over the last week or so, and we end with a song that sums up my views on the coming election. Between them we go on a Pete Zonked! led nostalgia fest to the years 1988 and 1989.

JOYCE McKINNEY EXPERIENCE and VISIONS OF CHANGE were two excellent bands from that late ‘80’s Hotbed of Hardcore activity Lemington Spa… there was definitely something in water there. Both bands stuck out some ace music and were always great live. Suspect Device favourites THE INSTIGATORS were really hitting their stride touring and recording in ’88, they were literally everywhere… in zines, on comp. tapes ‘n records, and ripping it up on a stage somewhere. The ‘Full Circle/Sleeper’ 7” was a real high point for me. I first saw SNUFF open for Heresy and Japan’s Rose Rose at The George Robey, London in October ’88. I’d no idea who these chirpy Londoners were but they were instantly memorable. Over the next 12 months I’d see them loads and saw their stock rise. A wild set by SNUFF at The Richmond, Brighton in October ’89, was the last gig I saw in the UK before I headed overseas a couple of days later (for a couple of years) As time marches on, the memories get a little hazier, but I do clearly remember a lively Saturday lunchtime set by HDQ at The Richmond, and it was whilst listening to their “Sinking’ album recently that I started pulling a few more ‘88/89 records off the shelf, setting this podcasts theme in motion. And Tony was willing to fire up the Flux Capacitor and send us back 30 years. What a Champ. Brighton’s own IMMOLATO TOMATOES used to put on a great show, but like so many bands back then never even got anything down on vinyl, so top job Aston at Boss Tuneage who compiled their demo’s on to a CD a few years back. Unusually for me I cannot recall where I saw FILLER, possibly a support slot at The George Robey? Who knows! Their first EP contained their first demo, the results were raw, but the quality of the songs cut thru, and ‘Hurt To Say’ is a killer track. Nottingham’s HERESY were a total fireball live, but rarely captured that energy on record, their album being a monumental let down. They bowed out in style though with the cracking “Whose Generation?” EP and “Everyday Madness Everyday” is a song that still sounds amazing to me… 2:26minutes of crazed ‘n furious precision. Total Powerhouse.
Pete Zonked! (November 2019)

It didn't take long for me to go with Pete's idea of choosing some songs from 1988/89, I have a lot of great memories from seeing these bands and buying their records. EXIT CONDITION sent me their 'Impact Time' demo and those songs still sound so urgent now. I traded letters with drummer Richard Stanier for quite a while after that, which is another thing that made the late '80s/early '90s such a memorable time. Friendships were formed through sharing music on cassette and writing letters. Each day the postman was eagerly awaited, and in those pre-privatisation days, the post came early. Meantime Records released a lot of great stuff, and the F.U.A.L album was one of the best, it has remained a favourite throughout the years. When Ian Armstrong, Meantime's head honcho, sent me the SOFA HEAD LP to review, the postman folded it to get it through the letter box. And it didn't snap! I returned after work to find it on the mat in a U shape. I tried my best to flatten it our under piles of books, but I could never get the opening track of each side to play. I bough myself another copy and gave the faulty one to Gaz, I think he still has it, it's such a great record. WAT TYLER were always fun, and Sean was, and remains, a friend. He helped us with the early SD Record releases, and to this day he will buy each issue of the zine. As the Southampton DIY punk scene came together, one of the first bands to come out of that burgeoning scene were Suicide Pact; they morphed into NOX MORTIS, who's demo is a thing of anarcho punk beauty. The tracks found their way on to two Meantime Records releases, the 'Shall We Dance' four band split 12", with one track on the 'Spleurk' compilation LP. Not Mortis were a great band.  I would later go on to be in Portiswood with guitarist Paul. I was a little late to Dan and had to buy their first two albums retrospectively, but they were a fine band who I still listen to periodically today. CULTURE SHOCK really stuck a chord. I'm not sure if it was because we all missed the Subhumans so much, and this was a way to still enjoy Dick's wonderful lyrics and delivery or if we all just wanted to dance! Gaz and me were big fans, and they played a couple of great gigs in Southampton. THE STUPIDS don't really need an introduction, and although the 'Jesus Meets The Stupids' album may not be as well remembered as their first two, but it does include some great songs.
Five of the bands that Pete chose would have been in my sets if he hadn't already nabbed them.
Tony Suspect

Podcast 76 - UK82

Graham insisted on this, and he was backed up by Gaz Suspect and Pete Zonked, so here it is.
Not exclusively songs from 1982, we allowed ourselves songs from a year or two either side. We tried to stay clear of the obvious, for the most part (one or two classics had to be played), and give you some of songs you may not always expect to hear from these bands; it was often B-Sides or album tracks that I always found myself playing most for some reason.
Some of these bands played a huge part in getting me though my teenage years, their songs spoke to me and helped make sense of a world that seemed confusing and daunting, not to mention scary at times. Others just had great songs that would cause Gaz and me to leap around our bedrooms making each other laugh. A couple of them have even been an inspiration when writing songs for my current band!
Of course we haven't been able to include all the songs we loved (the podcast is already over an hour long), and there are several bands that were relegated to the subs bench (Anti-Pasti, UK Decay, Toy Dolls, Red Alert, Expelled etc), but I found most of my choices came to me very quickly. We also didn't include any bands that are thought of as anarcho punk, but only because we did an anarcho podcast some time ago. Gaz and me never limited ourselves to any label back in the 1980s, if we thought a band was good then we bought their records.

Here's Pete, Graham and Gaz to take you though their choices...

Gaz
Well Infa Riot just struck a bit of a chord with me at the time and I particularly had a thing about The Winner. They actually never did that much either apart from the great ‘Still Out Of Order’ album and a couple of singles. I just thought they sounded great and then they just suddenly seemed to disappear as suddenly as they had arrived. File under Streetpunk and if you get a chance to see the reformed version still fronted by Lee Wilson with guitarist Barry D’Amery those early songs are still played as good as ever!
Chron Gen – Subway Sadist. Classic UK82 band, classic tune from that time and I think its fair to say made some great records!
The Cult Maniax! What a great band and just that little bit different from a lot of the other UK82 bands in style but none the less as punk as you like with their West Country twang! Blitz is a great song mixing thoughts of war and the inner city riots that kicked off the 1980’s. I always felt they suffered from poor recordings on some of their releases but luckily Blitz was a good enough song for that not to matter too much and in more recent times they have rerecorded a lot of their tunes to put that right!
The Dark – The Masque appeared on one of the Punk and Disorderly compilations (Three from memory!) and for whatever reason became one of the standout songs for me. Slightly dare I say ‘Goth’ in style with lyrics about death  I think and both band and song were not necessarily classic UK82.

Pete
Criminal Damage were from Polegate, which is just outside Eastbourne. When they broke up the drummer and singer/guitarist moved to Brighton where they and their crew were usually in the thick of it when it kicked off at gigs. The pair then formed Thrash Metal band ViRUS, but that’s a whole ‘nother story. I’m still mates with drummer Tezz. Whilst bands on the UK mainland were singing about war, violence and state oppression, Belfast’s Defects were actually living it, and the “Survival/Brutality” 7” is loaded with menace and defiance, definitely one of my favourite singles of the era. Peacehaven is a sprawling cliff top outcrop a few miles east along the coast from Brighton, and the teenage Test-Tubes anthem of youth club shenanigans is a classic tale of suburban boredom and alienation. The line about “Seaford and Saltdean” coming over for a ruck still cracks me up! There is a general consensus that the “Endangered Species” LP was a creative nadir for the UK SUBS, with its sole 7” “Countdown” including on its flipside unreleased banger “Plan of Action”, a pounding slab of SUBS greatness, and it’s lyrical sentiments remain highly relevant.
On a personal level, the common thread of my selections is that I saw all these bands in ‘82, an opportunity gifted to me by my elderly status. On the other hand it does mean there’s a pretty good chance I’ll depart this planet before some of you. Win-some/Lose-some I guess….

Graham
Ejected – Class of 82
Off the much Maligned – Touch of Class  LP – If Cock Sparrer or Menace had penned these lyrics, it would be hailed as genius.
Chaos UK – Army
Recorded at Cave studios in 83 – It sounds like it was recorded in a cave.  Plodding drums and that famous chainsaw guitar coupled with a west country accent, love the way he says “britiish armay”. Chaos UK surely had one of the longest lasting impacts from the time with Japan really taking to them (toured there in `85) and surely inventing C-beat
Ultra Violent – Crime for Revenge
For years this absolute belter (along with the Underdogs – East of Dachau) seemed  to go under the radar even though it was on Riot City in `83. Anyway If you love full throttle Hardcore punk, this song pretty much sums it up. Get…Revenge!
Mau Maus – Societys Rejects
Solid stripped down Punk from Sheffield. So fast they crammed 8 songs on their debut EP from 82 - No messing about and a great GBH influence in the mix. Sealed records just did a re-issue of the EPs and it’s a masterclass from beginning to end.
